Our Story

Remembering the Past
And Inspiring the Future

The first real preaching service held in Chandler was in the first week of January 1913. On January 20, a Methodist Episcopal Church was formally organized as Chandler Methodist Community Church.

Dr. A.J. Chandler donated a large lot on the southeast corner of Chandler Boulevard and California Streetfor our church. The first service in the “old flap church” was held on Mother’s Day, May 3. The building was made of wood with no windows – just canvas flaps around the entire structure.

In 1938 the canvas flaps were replaced by Gothic windows, and by 1940 the sanctuary had been remodeled into a 1,000 sq. ft. southwestern mission style building.

In 1956 a campaign was launched to raise funds for a completely new sanctuary. The old building was sold and moved out of town on May 1, 1959. Groundbreaking for the new sanctuary was celebrated in May 1960 with services held in the Fellowship Hall until the following Thanksgiving when the first service was held in the new sanctuary.

We moved to our new church site on the north side of Chandler Heights Road, just east of Arizona Avenue in March of 2008. Our mission remains the same: Making and Deploying Disciples Who Put GOD First Since 1913. As we grow, we will always have the rich history as “Chandler’s First Church.”

Over the years we have grown from our original old flap church, to our mission style building, to our sanctuary built in the 1960s, and  now to our Chandler Heights Road location. Our growing and thriving community of faith has been connecting people to Jesus Christ for more than 100 years. Chandler United Methodist Church has been a strong and dynamic presence, while providing leadership to our growing city.

Chandler United Methodist Church has a rich history of serving our area and our church family- both locally and globally- through  worship, hospitality, support of social service agencies, food and clothing drives, support of the military, Christian education,  outreach  to the homeless and others, support of missionaries around the world, and ministering to people of all walks of life.

We treasure our past and look forward to exciting times in the future life of Chandler United Methodist Church.
